My goal for the summer is to make different reading packets for our basal reader. I made one for The Billy Goats Gruff and saw a big improvement in comprehension (and test scores). Plus my students thought the activities were fun and seemed genuinely excited to complete the activities.
There are several poems in the basal reader and I usually save those for our 4 day weeks. One poem that generates lots of excitement is Mary Mack. Even the boys get into it!
In the poem, the students highlight or circle pairs of rhyming words.
I created a cover page to the packet. After we read the story, the students color the cover as they eat snack.
Students will cut and glue the sequence of the poem.
Students practice their visualization skills by drawing a picture of what they think Mary Mack looks like. Then they have to prove why they pictured Mary Mack that way.
You can download the entire packet HERE for free. I hope this will help you next school year, especially on those shorter weeks!
If you are looking for other reading packets, please be sure to follow my store this summer. (Everything is 50% off for the 24 hours.) Here are a few that I've already made.
This year I had a really sweet student in my class who loved pickles. I was thinking about her over the weekend and this idea just popped into my head!
I'm a little sad that I won't be able to share the unit with her because I know she would get a big kick out of it. But future classes will be happy to have something a little more exciting for our study of the -le sound.
There's a story about Princess Nicole who lives in a castle with her poodle. Get it?? I read it to my husband and he said I'm one step away from becoming Dr. Seuss. Haha.
When I was in elementary school, there was a teacher known as the pickle lady. I remember leaving my first grade classroom and seeing a huge pickle coming out of her room. My friend actually got a pickle lollipop from her! I remembering being glad I wasn't in her class because I thought she force fed you pickles everyday and I wasn't a fan back then. I had to include a pickle survey in the packet.
You can grab Perfect Pickles HERE for 50% off until tomorrow. If you need other items to make it to the $3 minimum TpT order, check out my $2 Deals category.
I only have 10 1/2 more days of school. Crazy to think how fast the year flew by!
If your class is anything like mine they are getting a little restless. As far as behavior goes, I started using Class Dojo.
Once the kids here the chime that someone has earned a point, you could hear a pin drop. At the end of the day, I give them Star Dollars for how many points they've earned.
I don't think I'd use Class Dojo all year long because I'm constantly turning on and off my TV. I need something extra up my sleeve for that last month.
As far as activities go, I need something quick, easy and engaging. I'm known for my crafts (Thanks TpT!). I want to show you some of the things we've done in the last week and will do the last few days.
